Authenticity: Being True to Oneself

As an immigrant, father, husband, lawyer, and entrepreneur, I have traveled a long and sometimes tortuous path towards understanding and accepting my authenticity. The journey to authenticity is not just a trip to one’s inner core, but an exploration of how this inner core reflects and resonates in the world around us. Born in Colombia and having made my life in the United States, I faced the challenge of weaving my identity between two cultures, two worlds that sometimes seemed to be at odds with each other. But in this confluence of experiences, I learned that being authentic is my greatest strength, especially in the realm of law and in my personal life.

Authenticity, I have discovered, is much more than simply being oneself; it is a deep commitment to living in accordance with your values, passions, and truths, even when the external environment seems challenging or incomprehensible. It’s easy to fall into the temptation of shaping oneself to others’ expectations, especially in a profession as rooted in tradition and external perceptions as the law. However, I have learned that my ability to serve, influence, and lead is directly linked to my ability to be genuinely myself.

Why is authenticity so crucial?

The importance of being authentic lies in its capacity to enrich our lives with purpose and satisfaction. By living authentically, we align with our deepest values and desires, allowing us to pursue what truly matters to us. This alignment not only improves our own life but also enables us to connect more genuinely and deeply with others, creating more meaningful and satisfying relationships. Achieving authenticity is a continuous process that involves deep introspection and honesty with oneself. It requires courage to face our shadows and vulnerabilities, and the willingness to act in accordance with our values, even when this means going against the current. Below, some tips and strategies are offered to foster authenticity in our lives:

  • Active introspection: I regularly dedicate time to reflect on my experiences, reactions, and decisions. This exercise in self-awareness helps me understand how my values and identity manifest in my daily life.

  • Genuine expression: I learned to communicate my thoughts and feelings honestly, both in my legal practice and in my personal relationships. This genuine expression fosters deeper and more meaningful connections.

  • Alignment of values: My decisions, both professional and personal, are guided by my fundamental values. This alignment ensures that my actions reflect who I am and what I believe in.

  • Acceptance of vulnerability: Being authentic also means being vulnerable. I have learned to embrace my flaws and struggles as integral parts of my being, which has enriched my empathy and understanding towards others.

  • Surrounding myself with support: I cultivate relationships with people who value and celebrate my authenticity. This circle of support is crucial to staying steadfast in my commitment to authenticity.

Authenticity is not a final destination, but a continuous journey. On my path, I have faced moments of doubt and challenge, but each obstacle has served to reaffirm the importance of living true to myself. In my legal practice, my writing, and my family life, authenticity is my compass, guiding me towards a life of purpose, passion, and deep connection.

Every day, I choose to be authentic, not only as a lawyer but as a husband, father, and citizen of the world. This commitment to authenticity is not always the easiest path, but it is, without doubt, the most rewarding. By living authentically, we not only enrich our own lives but also illuminate the path for others to discover and embrace their true essence.
