This imperial ambition sparked an invasion that met fierce resistance from the American nation.
On May 5, 1862, the French army, considered the best in the world at that time, advanced towards Puebla, where Mexican forces, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, were entrenched. Despite the numerical and technological superiority of the French, the Mexicans were determined to defend their territory. This battle was not only a military confrontation but also a symbolic struggle between foreign imposition and national sovereignty.
