Esta búsqueda constante de saber más no solo satisface mi curiosidad, sino que también me ha ayudado a entender mejor a las personas y el mundo que me rodea. Al aprender sobre diferentes culturas, ciencias o incluso filosofías, puedo conectarme de manera más profunda y empática con las personas que encuentro cada día. 

Además, el aprendizaje continuo me ofrece la posibilidad de reinventarme constantemente. A medida que adquiero nuevas habilidades o conocimientos, encuentro nuevas oportunidades y desafíos que me permiten crecer personal y profesionalmente. Hace unos años, decidí sumergirme en el mundo del marketing digital. Al principio, el vasto mar de términos como SEO, PPC, y análisis de contenido me abrumaba. Pero sabía que entender estos conceptos era crucial para adaptarme a un mundo cada vez más digital.

Planificar estos momentos me asegura de que siempre estoy avanzando en mi camino de aprendizaje, y me permite tratar estos momentos como citas importantes en mi agenda.

As a Colombian married to an American, I’ve discovered that our cultural differences are not barriers, but bridges that strengthen our relationship. For example, the December celebrations show how our traditions can coexist and complement each other. Casey has fallen in love with the Colombian-style Christmas, with its ‘novenas’ and ‘buñuelos’, while I have embraced the spirit of American Thanksgiving, learning to prepare the turkey and enjoy American football. This fusion of traditions has not only enriched our lives but also offered our families the opportunity to experience and appreciate another culture. 

Furthermore, we have learned to manage family expectations, which can be very different in our cultures. For instance, in Colombia, it is common for the extended family to play an active and frequent role in everyday life, while in the United States, family independence is more prevalent. We have worked together to find a balance that respects our roots and meets our needs as a couple, which sometimes means setting clear boundaries and at other times, opening our home to the wider family. 

Support and Growth 

In our shared life, mutual support extends deeply into the professional realm. As lawyers, Casey and I have faced and overcome the challenges of establishing and expanding our legal practice through our own firm. This process has not only been a testament to our mutual commitment but also a fertile ground for our professional growth. Amidst the daily chaos, there are moments of magical tranquility. Ally, my little artist, often immerses herself in art projects that transform our home into an improvised gallery. Watching her concentration and the seriousness with which she approaches her creativity is a reminder of the wonder of childhood and how, through her eyes, I can see the world as a place full of possibilities and beauty. The small daily achievements are equally magical. Seeing Adriana read her first book by herself or Antonio tying his shoes are triumphs that, although small, are hugely significant. These achievements not only mark their growth but also reaffirm the importance of my role as their father. They are reminders that my support and love are fundamental in their journey towards independence. 

Learning and Personal Growth 

Being a father has also been a journey of personal discovery. I have learned that patience is much more than simply waiting; it’s understanding. For example, with Enrique and Cristiano, who are completely opposite in temperament, I have learned to adapt my approach, recognizing that what works for one may not work for the other. This adaptability has been crucial in my relationship with each of them, allowing me to respond to their individual needs without losing sight of our common goal: their happiness and well-being. Additionally, the open and honest communication that I have cultivated with my wife, Casey, has been essential. She is not only my partner in this parenting adventure but also an inexhaustible source of wisdom and support. Together, we have navigated the challenges of raising a large family, learning from each other and strengthening our relationship in the process. 

Finding Balance: Work and Family Life 

One of the most significant challenges I face as the father of a large family is finding a balance between work and family life. This balance is crucial not only for my well-being but also for the emotional and psychological development of my children. Being a working father involves a constant negotiation between work demands and family needs. There are days when work obligations demand more of me, and I am forced to miss important events like Antonio’s soccer matches. These moments are difficult for both me and them. I have learned over time that being “present” doesn’t always mean being physically there, but also finding ways to actively participate in their lives, whether through phone calls to ask about their day or planning quality time during weekends. 

However, work flexibility has been a lifesaver. Being able to adjust my work schedule allows me to attend Olivia and Adriana’s school meetings or take Enrique to the doctor when necessary. This flexibility not only benefits my relationship with them but also allows me to support my wife, Casey, who also manages her own professional career. It’s a give-and-take; when one of us needs to take on more at home, the other tries to provide the necessary support at work.

Learning and Growth Through Example 

Finally, this pursuit of balance is also a teaching opportunity for my children. I want them to learn, through my example, the importance of responsibility and commitment both professionally and personally. I hope they see that although work is important, family always takes precedence. Thus, I teach my children, especially the older ones, about time management and prioritization, essential life skills. 

Finding the right balance between work and family life is an evolving process, especially with a large family. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to learn and grow together. This constant dance is complicated, but incredibly rewarding. Being a father has been the most challenging, fun, and rewarding experience of my life. Every day brings new lessons and, above all, an endless amount of love. I wouldn’t change a second of this beautiful madness that is fatherhood. 

Reflexiones divertidas y emocionantes que me ha dejado el ser papá

Ser padre de siete hijos es, sin duda, una aventura que redefine completamente el concepto de “normalidad”. Cada día, Austin, Olivia, Enrique, Adriana, Antonio, Cristiano, y Ally, me enseñan que la vida es un torbellino de emociones y eventos inesperados. Con cada uno de ellos, he compartido momentos que no solo han sido muy graciosos sino profundamente transformadores. 

El humor involuntario de ser padre 

Cada uno de mis hijos ha contribuido a mi repertorio de “bromas de papá”, aunque no siempre intencionalmente. Por ejemplo, Enrique y Cristiano son expertos en crear situaciones cómicas sin esfuerzo. Recuerdo una vez que Enrique, intentando ser el chef de la familia, decidió que cocinar espagueti mientras bailaba era una buena idea. El resultado fue una cocina que parecía más una escena de una película de comedia que un espacio para comer. Estos momentos de risa nos unen y nos recuerdan que la perfección está sobrevalorada. 

Además, los momentos de ternura inesperada también aportan su dosis de humor. Austin, con su seriedad, un día me entregó una tarjeta para el Día del Padre que simplemente decía: “Gracias por el Wifi”. Son recordatorios de que mi apoyo y amor son fundamentales en su camino hacia la independencia.

Además, la comunicación abierta y honesta que he cultivado con mi esposa, Casey, ha sido esencial. Ella no solo es mi compañera en esta aventura de la paternidad, sino también una fuente inagotable de sabiduría y apoyo. Juntos, hemos navegado por los desafíos de criar una familia numerosa, aprendiendo uno del otro y fortaleciendo nuestra relación en el proceso.

Hay días en los que las obligaciones laborales exigen más de mí, y me veo forzado a perderme eventos importantes como los partidos de fútbol de Antonio. Estos momentos son difíciles tanto para mí como para ellos. Aprendí con el tiempo que ser “presente” no siempre significa estar físicamente allí, sino también encontrar maneras de participar activamente en sus vidas, ya sea mediante llamadas telefónicas para preguntar cómo les fue ese día o planificando tiempo de calidad durante los fines de semana 

Sin embargo, la flexibilidad laboral ha sido un salvavidas. Esta flexibilidad no solo beneficia mi relación con ellos, sino que también me permite apoyar a mi esposa, Casey, quien también maneja su propia carrera profesional. Es un juego de dar y recibir; cuando uno de nosotros necesita asumir más en casa, el otro trata de proporcionar el apoyo necesario en el trabajo. 

Aprendizaje y crecimiento a través del ejemplo 

Finalmente, esta búsqueda de equilibrio es también una oportunidad de enseñanza para mis hijos. Quiero que aprendan, a través de mi ejemplo, la importancia de la responsabilidad y el compromiso tanto en el ámbito profesional como en el personal. Deseo que vean que aunque el trabajo es importante, la familia siempre tiene prioridad. Así, enseño a mis hijos, especialmente a los mayores, sobre la gestión del tiempo y la priorización, habilidades esenciales para la vida. 

Encontrar un equilibrio adecuado entre el trabajo y la vida familiar es un proceso en evolución, especialmente con una familia numerosa. Cada día trae consigo nuevos desafíos y oportunidades para aprender y crecer juntos. Esta danza constante es complicada, pero increíblemente gratificante. 

Ser padre ha sido la experiencia más desafiante, divertida y gratificante de mi vida. Cada día me trae nuevos aprendizajes y, sobre todo, un sinfín de amor. No cambiaría ni un segundo de esta locura hermosa que es la paternidad.

As a father of seven wonderful children and the husband of an exceptional mother, Mother’s Day holds a special significance for me. This day is an opportunity to reflect on the vital role that mothers play in our families and society. 

My own mother played a crucial role in my life. She brought me to the United States from Colombia, seeking a better future and more opportunities for her family. Her bravery and sacrifice have been a constant inspiration in my life and in my career as an immigration lawyer, where I have the privilege of working with families seeking to do the same for their children. 

My sister has also recently embarked on the journey of motherhood and is the mother of a beautiful one-year-old baby. Seeing her dedication and unconditional love for her child renews my admiration for the maternal instinct and the strength that all mothers exhibit every day. 

From both my personal and professional experience, I have seen the love and resilience of mothers from all over the world. These women not only nurture and educate but are often the strong core that keeps families together through times of uncertainty and change. 

Mother’s Day in the United States is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, a tradition that began over a century ago. However, beyond flowers and cards, I believe it is a time for deep reflection and genuine expression of gratitude towards those women who have given so much of themselves.

Como padre de siete hijos maravillosos y esposo de una madre excepcional, el Día de la Madre tiene un significado especial para mí. Esta fecha es una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el papel vital que juegan las madres en nuestras familias y en nuestra sociedad. 

Mi propia madre jugó un papel fundamental en mi vida. Me trajo a Estados Unidos desde Colombia, buscando un futuro mejor y más oportunidades para su familia.
