Reflections on Homeschooling: My Personal and Professional Experience

Today, I want to share a very personal part of my life: my experience with homeschooling. As an immigrant and attorney, I have learned a lot about the law and life in this country, and I believe my experiences can be useful to others in the Hispanic and Latino communities.

My Academic and Professional Journey

I arrived in the United States at 17 without speaking English. Through effort and determination, I graduated in economics and political science, and then in law. Education has always been a passion for me, influenced by my family of lawyers. But when it came to my children’s education, my wife and I chose a different path: homeschooling.

Our decision to homeschool our children was not easy. After varied experiences in the educational system, including challenges with one of my children who required an Individualized Education Program (IEP) due to a disability, we understood that the school system did not always meet the individual needs of children. This led us to seriously consider homeschooling.

Although I value formal education, I have observed deficiencies in the American educational system, such as differences between public and private schools and the variable quality of education. Additionally, issues like inappropriate sexual education, bullying, violence, and drugs deeply concern me. These problems, exacerbated during the pandemic, strengthened our decision to take a different path in our children’s education.

The Benefits and Challenges of Homeschooling

Homeschooling has allowed us to personalize learning and transmit our family and cultural values. However, I am not oblivious to the challenges, especially the economic ones. Addressing the reality that one of the parents may have to stop working implies a financial sacrifice, but the savings in childcare expenses, transportation, and uniforms, among others, are significant.

As an attorney, I understand the importance of knowing the laws and regulations related to homeschooling. In Washington, for example, the Washington Homeschool Organization has been an invaluable resource, providing guidance and support. It is crucial to comply with legal requirements, such as the declaration of intent and standardized tests.

Education in Times of Pandemic

The pandemic brought unprecedented challenges but also offered opportunities to explore educational alternatives. Technology and homeschooling support communities have grown tremendously, providing more resources to families who choose this path.

In the journey of our lives, there is a universal truth that often goes unnoticed: nobody is born knowing. Every human being, regardless of their origin, condition, or destiny, begins their journey with an empty mind, a blank canvas waiting to be painted with the strokes of their experiences, opportunities, and learnings. La Sabiduría del Aprendizaje Continuo: Nadie Nació Aprendido

En la trayectoria de nuestras vidas, hay una verdad universal que a menudo pasa desapercibida: nadie nació sabiendo. Cada ser humano, sin importar su origen, condición o destino, comienza su viaje con una mente vacía, un lienzo en blanco esperando ser pintado con las pinceladas de sus experiencias, oportunidades y aprendizajes.
