Reflections on Mother´s Day: A Personal Tribute to Maternal Figures
As a father of seven wonderful children and the husband of an exceptional mother, Mother’s Day holds a special significance for me. This day is an opportunity to reflect on the vital role that mothers play in our families and society.
My own mother played a crucial role in my life. She brought me to the United States from Colombia, seeking a better future and more opportunities for her family. Her bravery and sacrifice have been a constant inspiration in my life and in my career as an immigration lawyer, where I have the privilege of working with families seeking to do the same for their children.
My sister has also recently embarked on the journey of motherhood and is the mother of a beautiful one-year-old baby. Seeing her dedication and unconditional love for her child renews my admiration for the maternal instinct and the strength that all mothers exhibit every day.
From both my personal and professional experience, I have seen the love and resilience of mothers from all over the world. These women not only nurture and educate but are often the strong core that keeps families together through times of uncertainty and change.
Mother’s Day in the United States is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, a tradition that began over a century ago. However, beyond flowers and cards, I believe it is a time for deep reflection and genuine expression of gratitude towards those women who have given so much of themselves.
Personally, I like to honor this day not only with gifts but with quality time. Preparing a special meal for the mother of my children or simply taking a moment to tell her how much she means to us, are ways in which I try to show my appreciation.
It is also a day for the community, where local celebrations and events provide a space for families to come together. This community aspect reinforces the message that, although our experiences may vary, love and respect for mothers is a universal sentiment.
This Mother’s Day, as we celebrate the women who have shaped our lives, let’s also remember those who are far from their homes, fighting for a better future for their children in a new country. Their courage and determination are a source of inspiration and deserve our deepest respect and admiration.
